In this procedure the mole is removed from the skin under local anesthetic. Following the procedure, the skin may either be sutured or cauterized to close the wound. Laser biopsies are often reserved for moles that involve entanglement with blood vessels. It is a safer and cleaner procedure in that instance than simple excision. It, too, can be done under local anesthetic. However, in severe situations, it can require that the patient be put to sleep in order to ensure no movement during the procedure.A punch biopsy may also be done under local anesthetic. In this process a small amount of the skin around the mole is also automatically cut out. The wound is generally closed with stitches.Shave biopsies are generally reserved for atypical moles that stand away from the skin's surface. They, too, are done with local anesthesia. The procedure is called a "shave" biopsy because the mole is simply removed above the skin area rather than by cutting into the skin below the mole's protrusion. The process may be done either my scalpel or by electrolysis. However, this type of biopsy is not recommended when skin cancer is suspected because it does not remove the skin area below the protrusion.

7. Wait for the mole, or parts of or around it, to go to the lab for testing. If results return indicating suspicious skin cells or definitive cancer, one of two things may occur. The physician(s) may go ahead and do further skin excision, cutting away layer by layer of skin around the mole area until the returning lab samples come back clean. In the event that skin and tissue removal becomes too deep or too broad, or the area in question is located in a sensitive area of the body, the physician may close the wound and refer the patient to another physician specialist for further examination and possible additional surgery and/or treatment.

8. Submit the mole and or skin and tissue for additional lab testing.Since the initial biopsy results are sometimes deceiving, additional lab tests may be required. If anything unusual shows up, the physician may outline additional treatment or surgery needs. This could include an extended surgical process referred to as a "wide local excision." It essentially requires that more skin and tissue be cut away from the area where the mole existed until the remaining skin and tissue is found to be cancer free. This may be done either under local or general anesthetic, depending on the patient, the area of the body and a number of other factors. The wound is ultimately closed by stitches, unless the skin area is excessively large. In such situations, it may be necessary for the patient to have skin grafted onto the wound from another area of their body.

Using your digital camera for thermal imaging is easy but also permanent.

A digital camera uses something called a charged couple device (CCD) to translate an image to 1s and 0s to produce a digital photograph. It's easy to change a digital camera into a thermal imaging device by removing the infrared filter, which will allow you to take photographs even when it is dark out. The drawback is that once you make the changes you will never be able to take normal photographs again.

Instructions

1. Open up the camera using the Phillips screw driver. Slowly pry the camera apart and remove the area behind the lens, where the CCD is located. It is square shaped, and there will be a red piece of glass attached to it. This is the infrared (IR) filter.

2. Remove the IR filter by gently prying it off using the flat head screw driver. Be careful not to damage the CCD in the process.

3. Attach the film negative to the CCD by putting a dollop of glue on the film and sticking it on. Wait 30 to 45 minutes for it to dry.

4. Put the CCD back behind the lens and reassemble the camera and replace the screws.

5. Use your camera for thermal imaging by taking photos in the dark.The image will appear grayish and washed out, but you will now be able to see in dark, and low-light situations without the need for a flash.

Note that this works best with people and animals, since the camera will pick up their heat signatures, although you can take photos of objects as well. They just don't show up as clearly.

Chip Carving Tools

Use gouges to make designs in chip carving.

Bench Knife

A bench knife has a 1-3/4-inch-to-3-inch blade and tapers to a pointed tip. The top of the blade is sharp, which allows for long, straight lines to be carved. Bench-style knives longer than 3 inches are called sloyd knives. Other names given to a bench knife are whittling knives, detail knives, or straight knives. The bench knife is a must for any beginning chipper. Spend a little more money on a high-quality knife to ensure easy chipping on the first project.

Gouges

Acquire a straight, "U" and "V" gouge to use in chip carving. The entire blade is shaped to allow for long cuts. Use the gouges in the rough cutting stage. They cut away large portions of the wood prior to using the bench knife for fine cutting. The two main gouges for this purpose are the straight and "U" gouges. The "U" gouge is also known as a veining tool or parting tool.

The "V" gouge is used to create deep scored lines. The "V" gouge is available from a very tight "V" to a wide open "V". Use the "V" gouge to make joint lines or detailing a beard.

Chisel

A chisel has one sharp end. The sharp edge either is flat or angled. A chisel with an angled end is called a "skew." The chisel is used to remove large areas of the chip carving or for placing a crisp edge on corners. Chisels also are used for scraping the surface of the final carving to make it smooth.

Specialty Gouges

Many specialty gouges are available as the technique for chipping is mastered. Specialty gouges include a dog-leg skew, backbend gouge, spoonbit, bent gouges, and fishtails. Micro gouges are available for chippers who do small carvings.

6. Wash each part of the pump and collection kit, excluding the tubing, white cap and white pump connector, with hot water and a mild dish soap. You can use a sponge for most pieces, but you may need a baby bottle brush to clean the bottle and breast shield.

7. Rinse all of the parts with clean hot water, and let them air dry.

8. Repeat after each use.

Range of Motion Exercises

During the third and fourth weeks, grasp the big toe and gently flex it upward as far as is comfortable, then hold it for 10 seconds. Repeat this exercise three times, then flex it downward three times. Repeat this exercise three times daily. Increase this exercise to six times per day during the fifth and sixth week. By week seven, begin lifting your heal, keeping your big toe on the ground and using body weight to force flexing on the toe. Stand on your toes for 10 seconds, then relax. Crutches

While some patients may be able to walk immediately after surgery, (ref 1) you should generally rely on crutches to keep weight off of the affected foot. Your doctor may allow you to put some weight on it for balance, but your crutches will support most of your weight, most of the time. (CE: see reference 2)

Bathing

Avoid getting your foot wet throughout the entire recovery period unless your doctor allows it. Use of a shower bag or other tightly sealed waterproof bag will allow brief bathing, but avoid extended soaking or exposure to water. Do not go swimming or soak in a bath, hot tub or jacuzzi even if you have your foot covered, as prolonged exposure to water increases the chance of contact with water. (CE: see reference 2)

Side Effects

Check your temperature every day and examine your skin for redness or swelling. A fever or inflamed skin around the surgery area often indicate an infection, and you should alert your physician right away if these symptoms manifest. Cramps or difficulty breathing during recovery may also indicate a blood clot, which can cause other dangerous complications for you. What Are The Three Types Of Lung Cancer

Lung cancers are classified into two types: small cell lung cancers (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC). The three most common types of lung cancer are represented in NSCLC: adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and large cell carcinoma. According to the American Cancer Society, these three types comprise approximately 85% of lung cancers.

Adenocarcinoma

Adenocarcinoma is the most common of the three types, comprising almost half of all cases of NSCLC. Adenocarcinoma normally develops in the outer area of the lungs, and is found mostly in smokers, though it can occasionally be found in non-smokers. This form of cancer is characterized by growth of abnormal cells, which can spread to other parts of the body. Adenocarcinoma is more likely than other types of lung cancer to be contained in one area of the body, which is helpful in treatment, where surgery can remove the tumor if it is present in one area.

Squamous Cell Carcinomas

Squamous cell carcinomas, also known as epidermoid carcinomas, comprise nearly a third of NSCLC. These tumors develop most frequently in the central chest area in the bronchi and can cause symptoms of coughing up blood at an earlier stages than tumors located on the edges of the lungs, such as adenocarcinoma. Squamous cell carcinoma has been decreasing in prevalence, likely due to people inhaling smoke more deeply into the lung after the advent of filtered cigarettes.

Large Cell Carcinomas

Large cell carcinomas are the least common type of NSCLC, and are sometimes referred to as undifferentiated carcinomas. Large cell carcinomas are characterized by the size of the anaplastic cells and the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the lungs. Found in the central portion of the lung, the tumors are often accompanied by extensive bleeding and tissue damage. Large cell carcinomas tend to grow quickly and spread at an earlier stage than other forms of NSCLC.

Others

There are several other, less common types of NSCLC, including pleomorphic, carcinoid tumor, salivary gland carcinoma and unclassified carcinoma. It should also be noted that the three main types of NSCLC may be present in some mixture in a patient with lung cancer.

SCLC and Bronchial Carcinoids

Accounting for the remaining 10% of lung cancers (mixtures and abnormal lung cancers account for the missing 5%) are SCLC and bronchial carcinoids. SCLC are the most aggressive and rapid-developing type of lung cancers. With only 1% in non-smokers, SCLC are strongly linked to cigarette smoking. Bronchial carcinoids are unrelated to cigarette smoking. This type of lung cancer grows slowly and can be detected early enough for surgical treatment.

A condition called hypothyroidism can cause all of these symptoms and many more. Preliminary testing for low thyroid function involves a simple blood test. But if you've never had this type of testing done, you might wonder about the letters and numbers on your lab slip. Here's a simple guide to what your doctor is looking for when viewing your lab results.

What Does the Thyroid Do?

The thyroid is a small gland in the front of the neck composed of two lobes that wrap around the trachea and a band of tissue called the isthmus. The thyroid's role is to produce a hormone that regulates your metabolism--not only how quickly you lose weight, but your heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature. But the pituitary gland in the brain has a big role as well; if it detects that there's not enough thyroid hormone in the body, it dispatches its own thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) to the thyroid gland. Initial testing for low thyroid function determines how much TSH and thyroid hormone is in your blood.

FT4 Levels

Although used in singular tense, the thyroid hormone is actually made of two hormones: thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). T4 is produced by the thyroid gland; some of this T4 is converted in organs such as the liver and the brain and becomes T3. Free T4 (FT4) is T4 that enters specific tissues of the body directly. Therefore, measuring the amount of FT4 in the blood is an effective measure of determining low thyroid function. FT4 levels that are lower than normal can be indicative of hypothyroidism.

TSH Levels

In conjunction with FT4 levels, TSH levels are also checked to see how much hormone is being released by your pituitary gland. When thyroid function is low, the pituitary gland continues to dispatch TSH until it's satisfied that the level of T4 in the body is normal, and then the pituitary shuts off. High levels of TSH may indicate that the pituitary gland is working overtime to no avail. High TSH levels combined with low FT4 levels indicate low thyroid function.

What About T3?

If your thyroid function is low enough to cause hypothyroidism, you might still have a normal T3 level, as this is often the last hormone to show fluctuation. Even someone who is in the extreme range of hypothyroidism can have high TSH levels and low FT4 levels but perfectly normal T3. So don't be surprised if your initial lab work only entails a TSH and FT4 test. T3 tests are most often used to determine if the thyroid is overactive.

Other Ways of Assessing Low Thyroid Function

An assessment of FT4 and TSH levels may tell your doctor if you have low thyroid function, but it won't explain the underlying cause. Many cases of hypothyroidism are caused by an autoimmune disorder called Hashimoto's disease. A thyroid antibody test can determine whether certain antibodies are present in the blood that are related to this disorder. A radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU) test involves having you swallow a small amount of radioactive iodine to determine how much of it the thyroid takes in. A low RAIU is noted when the thyroid gland is underactive. Additionally, a scan of the actual gland itself can be obtained to detect any abnormalities.

Sternum Pain

Your sternum is a dagger-shaped, flat bone that is situated in the middle of your chest. It forms the rib cage, along with your ribs. The rib cage protects the lungs, heart and blood vessels from injury. Your sternum is made up of the manubrim (handle) that is situated at the top of the sternum and moves slightly. It is connected to the first two ribs. The body is found in the middle of the sternum; it directly connects to the third to seventh ribs and indirectly connects to the eighth through tenth ribs. The tip or xiphoid process is found at the bottom of the sternum. Initially, the tip is made of cartilage, but it turns into bone as you age. You may experience pain in your sternum for a number of reasons.

Considerations

Inflammation at the junctions where your upper ribs join with the cartilage that holds them to the sternum, or breastbone, is called costochondritis. This condition results in localized pain in your chest. If you push on the cartilage in the front of your ribcage, you will feel pain if you are suffering from costochondritis.

Potential

Another condition that can result in sternum pain is called Tietze syndrome, which is a form of costochondritis, and it, too, is the result of inflammation in the breast area. The difference between the two conditions is that swelling occurs with Tietze syndrome and doesn't with costochondritis. The swelling appears at the junction of the ribs and cartilage, usually at the second and third rib sites. If you have had surgery on your sternum, Tietze syndrome may result. The reason for the swelling is not known. If you have this problem, ask your physician about getting corticosteroid injections or taking NSAIDs, which are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; they should provide you with some relief.

Infection

According to Dr. Nathan Wei, a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Rheumatology, septic arthritis can also result in sternum pain. Septic arthritis develops when there is an infection in the synovial, or joint, fluid and in the joint tissues. Another name for septic arthritis is pyogenic arthritis.

Inflammation

A chronic inflammatory type of arthritis called ankylosing spondylitis (AS) can result in sternum pain. This condition targets the joints at the base of the spine. The joints between the spine and the ribs, and between the sternum and the ribs, can become stiff and painful. The stiffness results in decreased chest expansion.

Solution

You may find relief from sternum pain by applying a hot compress to the site. Ask your physician if you should be taking NSAIDs for pain relief.
