Take over a carpooling day, or run to the pharmacy for medications. There are a million details that weigh on the mind of someone busy undergoing treatment, so being their hands and feet to get chores done is a huge help.

3. Volunteer to take over the communications chore. Those with cancer are sometimes too busy and too exhausted to keep all those around them informed. If you can be the phone tree for information, it releases the breast cancer patient from another duty, so they can concentrate on getting well.

4. Tailor your assistance to your intimacy level. You may not be at a comfort level with your friend to be involved in her household activities while she is undergoing treatment. You can still say you care with emails and cards, with thoughtful comforts like hobby or travel magazines, with healthy treats like fresh fruit, or specially-compiled CDs of calming music or positive affirmations. Gift certificates for manicures or massages are always appreciated, and such kindnesses are never forgotten.

5. Stay in contact. Even male friends of a breast cancer patient have a role to play in offering support. Having breast cancer is one of the greatest assaults on a woman's femininity, so thoughtful gifts that honor her femininity are always valued. A bouquet of simple flowers, a beautiful photo, or a simple bracelet tells the patient they are precious to you, and this can go a long way to making her feel whole again.

How Does Having A Child Change Your Taxes

Having a child can greatly reduce your tax burden.

Having a child is one of several life events that can substantially impact your tax situation. Unlike other life events, having a child is almost always beneficial to your tax situation, as children usually reduce the amount of tax for which you are responsible. Fortunately, it is relatively easy to understand the impact that having a child will have on your tax situation and to take advantage of the many benefits.

Tax Liability

Deductions, exemptions and credits reduce your overall tax liability. The more of these you claim on your income tax returns, the lower your tax liability becomes. Having a child adds one exemption to your return, which automatically reduces your tax liability in the amount of $3,650 per child as of 2010. In addition to the exemption you receive for your child, you may also be eligible to receive a number of tax credits including but not limited to: the Earned Income Credit (a refundable credit based on income that may provide you a refund even if you aren't responsible for paying tax); Child Tax Credit ($1,000 for each child under the age of 17 at the end of the tax year); and Additional Child Tax Credit. You may also be able to claim dependent and child care expenses for your child.

Considerations

Having a child will require that you make a few changes to your withholding amount at work. You will need to add an exemption to your W-4 form to mark the addition of your child. This added exemption will result in more money in your paycheck, as it will reduce your federal withholding.

Limits

There are income limits on some of the credits for which you may be eligible, depending upon your income. For example, the Child Tax Credit will be reduced for joint filers earning over $110,000 and single filers earning in over $75,000 as of 2010.

Warning

The Social Security Number used to claim your child on your income tax return can only be used once to claim an exemption or deduction. What this means is that if you share custody, then you will need to determine which of you will claim the child and for which years. IRS eligibility guidelines require that the taxpayer who claims the child must have provided the majority of support for the child. However, instructions on how divorced taxpayers should file are often found in the divorce decree.

Exceptions

You may actually be required to file a return for a child who inherited a trust fund for which they earn interest. Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 for the specific rules regarding your child's type of estate or trust fund.

and Disney, nothing whets the appetite of the financial press more

than a hostile takeover bid. If an avaricious company comes hunting

for your firm, set the bait with a dose of poison. Here's the potion, as

well as some other evasive maneuvers.

Instructions

Create a poison pill

1. Formulate a poison pill the hostile buyer won't want to swallow. Also known as a shareholders rights plan, this makes a takeover prohibitively expensive by granting existing shareholders the right to purchase newly issued stock at a greatly reduced price.

2. Establish an exercise price--the amount shareholders will pay to buy additional shares. Include a dilution adjustment factor. Many shareholders rights plans state that the company will issue shares with a current market value of twice the exercise price.

3. Set a redemption price. This is a nominal sum--often $0.01 per right--for which shareholders may redeem the rights before they are exercisable.

4. Set a trigger to launch the shareholders rights plan. For example, have the plan go into effect when someone tries to acquire a certain percentage of outstanding total shares--typically 15 to 20 percent, but sometimes as low as 10 percent.

5. Set a time limit on the plan's terms. Ten years is common.

Put up other defenses

6. Buy back some of your own shares. This is a common defensive measure for both large and small corporations. Of course you'll need to have available capital.

7. Examine your corporate charter. Clauses may exist that provide for removal of directors only for cause or for staggered board terms. The latter make it difficult for the stalking company to eliminate an entire board via a proxy vote and replace it with directors more receptive to the takeover.

8. Research your state's corporation laws, which often include antitakeover provisions. Consult your attorneys about adding an amendment to your bylaws to make a takeover more difficult.

9. Install a company benefits plan with expensive change-ofownership provisions.

10. Spin off a fast-growing subsidiary, thus reducing your company's appeal. Be sure to get your attorney's advice on the legality of the divestiture.

11. Enter into a partnership with another company and include a large breakup fee in the agreement. A hostile acquiring company would then have to pay a significant fee to your partner when purchasing your firm.

12. Respond rapidly and fervently at the first hints of a takeover attempt. The best tactic may be a combination of the above. Many companies, for example, will fight back with both a stock repurchase plan and a spin-off of one or more divisions.

While many women experience irregularity in their menstrual cycles from time to time, chronic irregular periods can be a sign of a health problem. Breast Ductal Infection

Women may develop breast infections within the first six weeks after delivery.

Causes

Breast infections form after bacteria known as Staphylococcus aureus enters the duct either directly or via cracks in the nipple.

Symptoms

Diagnosis

If a woman is breastfeeding, then no tests are required; however, in the case of a woman presenting infection who is not lactating, the doctor may perform a mammogram or a breast biopsy ultrasound.

Treatment

Most ductal infections will clear up by using warm compresses for 15 to 20 minutes each day. In an extreme or persistent case, a doctor may prescribe antibiotics.

Prevention

In order to prevent its occurrence, women are advised to practice proper nipple care and latching techniques.

Cardiac Augmentation

Cardiac augmentation can help with a weak heart.

Heart disease is a common problem. Cardiac augmentation is a procedure designed to help hearts in a "weakened" state pump. New designs of temporary augmentation have been developed to allow a heart after surgery to heal more quickly by allowing one ventricle to rest.

Reasons for Treatment

There are a number of reasons that cardiac augmentation may be needed. Augmentation is primarily required when the heart has been weakened by disease or some other condition. When the ventricles (the two large, lower chambers of the heart) find it difficult to pump then the heart is considered weak. A heart that has recently undergone surgery may also temporarily require some help to beat regularly.

Cardiac Augmentation

Cardiac augmentation usually refers to procedure to help the heart beat regularly, often during surgery. During one heart augmentation, the heart is surrounded by what is sometimes referred to as a "heart cuff." During this procedure the right and left ventricles are surrounded by two balloons. These balloons then rhythmically inflate and drain, which performs the function of pumping for the heart.

Post-surgery Augmentation

When a weakened heart has undergone surgery, it may need to be augmented with a heart pump. This is a small device which is implanted by being inserted through an artery into the left ventricle. The device pumps for the ventricle, allowing the chamber to rest for a time. A heart pump is usually only left in place for a few days, allowing the weak heart enough time to recover and begin an unassisted regular heart beat.

Heart Pumps

Some heart pumps are used to maintain a regular heart beat and avoid heart failure while a patient waits for a heart transplant. Old examples of heart pumps used moving parts, such as the before-mentioned balloons, to simulate the hearts rhythms. Second generation heart pumps, which are still available, use rotary motors to assist in pumping blood through the body but do not create a pulse. The newest generation of pumps use implanted tubes to bypass the weakened ventricle, using centrifugal force to pump blood.

Considerations

The surgeon will not use a heart cuff during surgery if it would plainly cause complications. Temporary cardiac augmentation using small heart pumps very rarely fail and are designed to assist rather than entirely replace the ventricle. More permanent heart pumps may require regular visits to a doctor to ensure that the implant is not having trouble doing its job. Second generation heart pumps usually only have a lifespan of about ten years. Some third generation heart pumps are used instead of transplants all together, but may still require regular check-ups.

Hormone therapy involves preventing the production of hormones such as estrogen and tamoxifen that have been known to cause cancer. Chemotherapy uses drugs to stop the growth of cancer cells by killing them or preventing them from dividing. Chemotherapy can be extremely difficult on cancer patients, but is sometimes necessary for their survival.

Ending your rebuttals powerfully will improve your performance in debates.

Rebuttals allow you to directly attack your opponent's argument, looking for fallacies and lapses in logic that weaken their position. Your closing statement for a rebuttal in a debate will be the last thing you write, but may also be one of the most important. The last sentence in a rebuttal should incorporate the most salient points of your argument succinctly, especially for an oral debate. Your goal with the last sentence is to end your rebuttal on the strongest note possible. This will leave the judges with something substantial to chew on as they weigh your rebuttal against your opponent's argument.

Instructions

1. Make a list of your rebuttal's major points, mainly ideas in your opponent's argument that are invalid or weak in logic. You don't need full sentences, just the gist of an idea. Think of this as brainstorming, not writing.

Steps Of Cell Fractionation

Cells are tiny but complex biological machines.

Cells are the basic building blocks of all living organisms but are themselves complicated systems with many different components. Cell fractionation is the process by which cells are broken up to separate these components without disrupting their functions. Once this is done, these components (known as organelles and macromolecules) are available for analysis and experimentation. Fractionation demands some specialized skill and equipment but is a simple four-step process.

Instructions

1. Break up the cells. This can be done by vibrating them with ultrasonic waves, pushing them through a narrow orifice in a press, or grinding them in a blender. If done carefully with special lab equipment (available from laboratory suppliers), it can be done in a way that doesn't destroy the organelles within the cells. Instead, the cell-breaking process creates a slurry or "homogenate" of free-floating cell parts that can then be separated out.

2. Separate the organelles and macromolecules using a centrifuge. A centrifuge rotates a test tube full of homogenate at an adjustable speed; the centrifugal force produced by the rotation pulls the organelles outward toward one end of a tube or beaker. A lower speed will pull the heaviest organelles, such as nuclei, whereas higher speeds will pull down mitochondria and other, lighter cell components.

3. Separate the fractionated cells more exactly by adding layers of sodium or sucrose (salt and sugar) to the test tube being centrifuged. When the organelles are pulled through the layers, each type moves at a different and measurable rate, which allows researchers to isolate cell components from each other.

4. Analyse the resulting separated organelles and macromolecules. This procedure can be used to extract components as small as DNA strands, which can then be further broken down into individual nucleotide pairs. This is the basis of many different strands of scientific analysis, from the detection of genetic disorders to the tracking of evolutionary history.
