The tiles have to be cut around the shower fixtures.
When deciding the material for your shower enclosure, you can go with an easy-to-install one-piece fiberglass shower enclosure, or you can build your own out of tile. The tile option takes more time, but it is a classic look that will last for years. Make sure the tiles you buy are well sealed (ceramic is always a good choice). Start with a backing of wetrock or cement board.
Instructions
1. Draw a vertical line up the center of each of the shower walls, from the shower floor to the top of the area you are tiling.
2. Using a tiling trowel, apply thin set mortar along the bottom of one wall, from the floor to about 2 feet above the floor. You should still be able to see the vertical line through the mortar.
3. Set the bottom row of tiles into the mortar, starting at the floor, with the first two tiles sitting on either side of the vertical line. Put spacers between the tiles and under them (to separate the bottoms of the tiles from the shower floor). Cut the tiles at the two ends of the rows to fit against the side walls, setting them with the cut sides facing the corners.
4. Repeat the process for the next row up, and the next, building up the wall. Spread more mortar as needed. Use your tile saw to cut around the shower head and other wall fixtures. Tile the whole wall.
5. Repeat the process for each of the other walls. Let the tiles set overnight. Pull out the spacers.
6. Spread grout onto the walls with a grout trowel, and press the grout into the spaces. Don't fill the space at the bottom of the wall (between the wall tiles and the floor), but grout the rest. Wipe up the excess grout with a damp sponge. Let the grout dry overnight.
7. Run a smooth bead of caulk in the line between the bottom of the wall tiles and the floor. Let the caulk and grout set for another 48 hours before using the shower.
Tips Warnings
Wear goggles when cutting the tiles.
