Repair A 4by4 Fence Post

A wooden fence can really make your home and yard look more appealing, but it also might mean some headaches for you as well. Though wooden fences do look nice, there is much more maintenance that goes along with them. They break down quicker than chain-link or vinyl fences, which can leave you needing to do some repair work. One not uncommon required repair is to fix a damaged fence post. Fortunately you probably won't have to remove the post from the ground, and can brace it instead.

Instructions

1. Push the damaged fence post upright until it is in line with the rest of the fence. Wedge the 6-inch-long two-by-four between the post and the ground so the post remains in place. Nail the top end of the piece of wood to the post, but leave the head of the nail protruding slightly so you can remove it easily.

2. Remove any fence pickets on either side of the fence that either cover the post, or are to the immediate right and left of the post. You should only have to remove one or two from each side. Hold a small block of scrap wood against the backside of the picket to be removed. Hit the block of wood with your hammer so the top of the pickets pops loose. Pull the nails out with a pry bar. Repeat for the bottom of the picket. Remove all of the pickets blocking the post.

3. Dig out the dirt around the base of the fence post. Keep digging until you see the concrete holding the post in place. Wipe away any loose dirt so you can clearly see the top of the concrete.

4. Set one half of the post repair bracket on top of the concrete with the edges over the base of the post. Drive the bracket into the concrete with a sledgehammer. Angle the bracket so that it wedges itself into the concrete, while at the same time it slides over the top of the post. Once the bracket is firmly lodged in the concrete, tap the top of the bracket so it completely covers the post like a sleeve.

5. Nail the bracket to the fence post with several galvanized nails.

6. Drive the other side of the bracket into place on the other side of the fence post. Perform this just as you did in step 4 above. Nail the bracket to the other side of the post.

7. Remove the piece of wood used to prop up the fence post. Pull the nail and discard the wood.

8. Refill the post hole with dirt. Pack the dirt down with the backside of your shovel.

9. Nail the pickets you removed earlier back in place.
