50s Theme Bridal Shower

Plan your bridal shower around 50s-themed images.

The 1950s was a decade when women stayed at home as housewives after working during the war and teens listened and danced to Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis and hung out in diners. These images of the 50s, the era of the "Baby Boomers," can help give you ideas for planning your 50s-themed bridal shower for everything from the invitations to the food.

Invitations

Email and text messaging did not exist in the 1950s so start your 50s theme bridal shower right by only sending invitations by mail or giving them to friends in person. Choose a 1950s design for your invitation, such as one with a housewife from the 50s or a girl in a poodle skirt. Include all the necessary information and mention the theme of the shower. You can even ask your guests to come dressed in a 1950s outfit.

Decorations

Decorate your bridal shower in colors that were often used in the 1950s to get the look and feel of that era. Use pastel colors such as pink, aqua, peach and yellow as well as striking colors like turquoise, chartreuse and flamingo pink. Use plates, tea cups, napkins, tablecloths, place mats, centerpieces, streamers and balloons in a combination of any of these colors as part of your decorations.

Food and Drinks

Create an appetizer tray with celery filled with cream cheese, grapes and fruit kabobs and fill bowls with Chex Mix, a signature snack of the 50s. Foods that were often served during the 1950s that you can serve in a bridal shower are seafood cocktail, guacamole or cheese dip with chips and crackers and deviled ham and mushroom canapes. Other foods popular during the 1950s were tuna noodle and green bean casseroles, hot cheese puffs, miniature pizzas, deviled eggs and chicken pot pie. Butter cookies, fruit cups, melon balls and sherbet, ice cream with cherries, chiffon pie and baked Alaska are some dessert ideas. For beverages, guests can drink Tang orange juice, fruit punch, milkshakes, iced tea, coffee, ginger ale and soda -- especially soda in glass bottles if they're available.

Giveaways

Give your guests a bag of hair rollers, a vintage cookbook or a recipe that was popular during the 1950s with all the necessary ingredients. Give away aprons, 50s-themed refrigerator magnets, recipe boxes, cupcakes in pastel colors or cookies shaped like nostalgic items such as jukeboxes, poodle skirts or 1950s-style double-slot toasters and refrigerators. Other giveaways include bags of jelly beans in pastel colors, homemade jam and "Candy Buttons," which are pastel colored candy dots on paper.
