Repair A Shower Faucet Cartridge

A shower will not work without the shower cartridge.

A shower cartridge is the part inside the shower. It is a multi-function valve that directs the flow of hot and cold water. When you turn the handle, this cartridge opens and closes the hot and cold water valves. In short, it is the part allowing you control over water temperature. These cartridges are made of plastic and often break. Replacing one is simple, however. All you need is the right part and some basic skill.

Instructions

1. Turn the shower pipe valve to the off (or closed) position to turn off the water. You must have access to this valve.

2. Search for the locking screw holding the shower handle knob fixture in place. It is usually under the handle or under a cover on the shower, as in Moen faucets. Pry this cover off and you'll see the screw head. Loosen the screw and remove it with a screwdriver. Slide the handle off.

3. Pry off the trim piece between the handle and the shower wall, using a metal pry bar. You'll see the head of the shower's water pipe.

4. Pull out the cartridge inside the head of the water pipe. It is a small, cylindrical part with a plastic or metal tip. Use a pair of pliers to pull this out. If retaining clips are holding it in place, pry these off first by inserting the screwdriver head under the clips and tilting the screwdriver handle down.

5. Hold the cartridge up to your replacement cartridge. It should look exactly the same.

6. Slide the new cartridge into the head of the pipe. Replace the retaining clips. Attach the faucet trim piece. Slide the faucet handle on and tighten the attaching screw with the screwdriver.
