According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average medical technician made an average salary of $37,150 in 2008.
State Average Salary
In 2008, medical technicians working in Rhode Island had the highest average salary at $54,130, according to the BLS. Those working in places like Connecticut, District of Columbia, Maryland and New York earned average salaries in the $40,000s. Massachusetts, with the highest concentration of medical technicians in the country, had an average salary of $39,490.
Metropolitan Average Salary
Champaign-Urbana had the highest average medical technician salary in 2008 at $63,210, according to the BLS. New Haven and Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk in Connecticut, and San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara and Salinas in California had salaries in the low $50,000s.
Workplace Average Salary
In 2008, most medical technicians, according to the BLS, worked in hospitals and physicians' offices, where they made salaries in the mid- to high $30,000s. The highest earners, however, worked in junior colleges as assistants to physicians or under laboratory managers, where they made an average salary of $45,120.
Salary Outlook
Salaries for medical technicians grew by 0.4 percent from 2007 to 2008. According to the BLS, employment is expected to grow by 14 percent between 2008 and 2018, which is faster than the average for all U.S. occupations. This could translate into a similar growth for salaries.
