It is rather normal for parts of the body to be sore, and that includes the breasts. Soreness in the breasts can affect not only women, but men, as well. Breast soreness can be a sign of normal happenings in the body's development, while in extreme cases it can be a sign of serious medical problems, such as cancer.
Body Development
Breast soreness may be caused by the beginning of breast development. At the beginning of this development, the young woman or man may have small buds beneath the nipple. The buds are very tender during the puberty stages and growth of the breast.
Premenstrual Syndrome
At the beginning of a woman's period, it is common to experience soreness in the breasts. This is caused by the body producing excess amounts of the estrogen and progesterone hormones. The sudden change in the levels of these hormones causes premenstrual syndrome.
Pregnancy/Breast-feeding
One of the first signs of pregnancy can be swelling and soreness of the breasts. Look for discharge coming from the nipples of the breasts. If you think you might be pregnant, call a doctor to confirm. If you have just recently had a baby and are breast-feeding, the breasts may be sore.
Treatment
If the breasts are sore because of menstruation, the symptoms should go away once a period has begun. Another way to decrease the pain in the breasts is to wear a sports bra that will help support the chest.
Breast Cancer
In extreme cases, breast soreness may be a sign of breast cancer. In these cases, the breasts may appear very red, inflamed and sore. If you fear breast cancer, lie on your back and run your hand around your breasts slowly. Look to identify a lump on the breast. If you suspect cancer, call a health care provider immediately.
