Getting a regular gynecological exam is an important health practice.
A gynecological exam, or pelvic exam, is typically done by a doctor or physician's assistant. A professional will check the health of your pelvic and reproductive organs with a physical exam, and she may also take samples of tissue and fluid for testing. If you have not had an exam and you are sexually active or are having discomfort or troubling symptoms in your pelvic region you should considering scheduling an exam. Some women find the process a bit stressful or uncomfortable, so it's helpful to plan ahead.
Instructions
1. Request a referral for a gynecologist or women's health clinic from your primary care doctor. Many women prefer to have female professionals perform their gynecological exams. Ask close friends or family for some suggestions to ensure you have a doctor with whom you'll feel comfortable. Gather several possible names and research the options online.
2. Call the clinic or doctor's office and request an appointment for a pelvic exam. Inform the receptionist if this is your first gynecological exam because the doctor may want to run specific laboratory tests. Ask about specific payment issues, especially if you have to provide any paperwork for your insurance. If you are under 18, you may need parental consent.
3. Arrive at your appointment at least 20 minutes in advance to fill out medical history and consent forms. Drink something about an hour before your appointment because the doctor will probably want to take a urine sample.
