What Can A Woman Expect At A Colorectal Exam

According to Wellsphere, 130,000 Americans have colorectal cancer. It is the second most common form of cancer, claiming the lives of 45,000 people a year. Women should have regular examinations to prevent colorectal cancer.

Digital Rectal Examination

During a digital rectal examination, the doctor will ask the woman to undress below the waist and cover up. Then she will put her feet in stirrups. Using lubrication, the doctor will insert a gloved finger in the rectum, checking for abnormalities. He may place the other hand on the abdomen, feeling for tenderness or any growths.

Fecal Occult Blood Test

The patient will bring in a stool sample. A laboratory will examine the stool sample for any traces of blood.

Colonoscopy

During a colonoscopy, the patient receives medication through an IV to help her relax. The patient lies on her side, and the doctor inserts an instrument through the rectum that transmits images of the colon lining and the rest of the large intestine, checking for abnormalities. This procedure usually lasts about 30 to 40 minutes.
