A radiology assistant is an advanced technician who works directly with a radiologist through procedures including radiologic examinations, conducts patient evaluations and makes observations on patient images. To become a radiology assistant, various programs are available at universities across the country. Before deciding whether radiology assistant is a perfect career choice, a few requirements should be considered when enrolling into the program.
Bachelor's Degree
For most radiology assistant programs, the degree offered is a master's of science; therefore, it is important to graduate with a bachelor's degree in applied science from an accredited university.
ARRT Certification
The candidate has to obtain certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, or ARRT, to show prior knowledge of procedures associated with the radiography industry. Certification has to be in good standing when being considered for entry into a master's program.
Clinical Experience
Candidates must have at least 2 years of experience working with a radiologist or have prior knowledge in the industry.
Research Courses
Most university programs required students to take 6 credit hours of research courses, which include statistics and research design.
Core Courses
Core courses expand an individual's knowledge of radiography and discover new material that is essential for a future career as a radiology assistant. Courses include an average of 30 graduate credit hour courses, clinical courses that required an average of 24 contact hours per week at a clinic or hospital chosen by the clinical instructor and a thesis topic to be completed at the end of the program.
