Build Thermal Imaging Cameras

Build thermal imaging cameras with a Web cam.

A thermal imaging camera is one that can see in the dark by exposing the charged coupler device (CCD) of a digital camera to the infrared spectrum of light. Building one is actually pretty simple and requires just a few household items. The process takes only a couple of hours to complete, and you will be able to take photos in the dark.

Instructions

1. Pry the Web cam apart using a flat head screwdriver. Be careful not to damage the casing.

2. Pull the CCD out from behind the lens of the Web cam. It is square in shape and has a piece of red glass or plastic sitting on top. This is the infrared (IR) filter.

3. Remove the IR filter by using the screwdriver to gently pry it off. Discard the filter and replace it with the film negative. Attach it to the CCD by putting a bit of non-toxic glue on the bottom. Wait for it to dry.

4. Reassemble the Web cam with the adhesive glue and wait for that to dry. You are now ready to take photos with your new thermal imaging camera.

5. Take photos just as you normally would, except in the dark or in low light situations. The result will be a washed out image, but you will be able to see clearly in the dark, especially if you are taking pictures of animals or people as they're heat signatures will be seen more clearly.
