Fresno, in central California, is a city with more than 900,000 residents and has many higher education opportunities. The city has both public and private degree-granting colleges, as well as opportunities for vocational education. The oldest community college in California is located in Fresno, as is one of the 23 campuses of California State University.


Fresno City College


When Fresno City College was founded in 1910, it was the first community college in the Golden State. It also was the second oldest community college in the United States. Today it enrolls more than 20,000 students annually. These students are seeking vocational training as well as preparing themselves to transfer to four-year colleges. FCC offers numerous associate's degrees and certificate programs, in areas ranging from justice administration, real estate, paralegal, fine art photography, surgical technology and such traditional vocational fields as welding and air conditioning.

California State University, Fresno


California State University, Fresno is one of 23 campuses in the California State University system. It is also known as Fresno State. It was founded as Fresno State Normal School in 1911, and has been offering advanced degrees since 1949. More than 21,000 students attend Fresno State annually, studying for bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. The college offers bachelor's degrees in such diverse areas as African studies, athletic training, anthropology, viticulture and French. It offers master's degrees in more than 40 subjects, including forensic science, mass communications and linguistics as well as doctoral degrees in physical therapy, educational leadership and psychology. The college says 96 percent of its tenured faculty hold doctoral degrees in their field of study.

Fresno Pacific University


Fresno Pacific University is a small Christian university that was known as Pacific Bible Institute when it was founded in 1944. Enrollment now is about 1,200 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students. It strives for ethical and spiritual development of its students as they complete academic programs. Fresno Pacific University offers bachelor's and master's degrees, and adult degree completion programs. It has four schools: business; education; humanities, religion and social sciences; and natural sciences. The School of Humanities offers a certificate program in peacemaking as well as a master of arts. This school also offers 16 majors for undergraduate students.
