Southern California medical trade schools prepare students for careers in the health care industry. The programs in these schools combine academic coursework with professional training. Career centers assist graduates with finding employment opportunities with local hospitals and medical facilities. Careers may be available to work in radiology, administrative offices, biomedical industry and nursing.
Southern California Institute of Technology
Located in Anaheim the Southern California Institute of Technology offers a biomedical technology diploma program that can be completed in seven months. Students must complete 56.5 credits, and courses are offered in the evening for those with other personal or professional obligations. The biomedical technology program teaches students to maintain and repair biomedical equipment and instruments. Courses cover topics in human anatomy, electronic fundamentals and biomedical instrumentation.
Modern Technology School
The Modern Technology School in Fountain Valley has an X-ray technician/medical assistant training program that prepares students to work in the health care field. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the National Certification Medical Assistant examination or the California State Limited Permit X-Ray Technician Examination. The courses teach students about medical terminology, radiography, radiation protection, anatomy and physiology, and darkroom procedures. In addition to classroom work, students are required to work in clinical settings and gain professional experience.
CIT College of InfoMedical Technology
Fullerton, just north of Anaheim, is home to the CIT College of InfoMedical Technolgoy. This medical trade school offers programs in medical assisting, dental assisting and vocational nursing. The 14-month vocational nursing program requires students to complete 1,591 hours of classroom and clinical training. The theoretical portion of the program teaches students about environmental health, illness, nutrition, growth and development, psychology and nursing. Clinical rotations allow prospective vocational nurses to learn about patient assessment, mental health, cardiology, geriatrics, medical emergencies and administration of medications.
ITT Technical Institute
The ITT Technical Institute in San Diego offers an associate degree in health information technology. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Information and Information Management Education. Full-time students can complete the program in eight quarters, and courses include human diseases, healthcare statistics, medical terminology, health care recording, medical coding and health care management. Students are able to take courses during the day or evening, and on campus or online. Graduates are qualified to work in medical offices and hospital administrative offices.
