Nurse practitioner.
Nurse practitioners are advanced practice registered nurses (RNs) trained at the master's degree level to provide medical care. To meet the needs of working RNs, several Wisconsin state universities offer graduate level nursing programs with distance learning options that include the nurse practitioner specialty.
Programs
University of Wisconsin-Madison offers master of science in nursing (MSN) programs with the nurse practitioner specialty for students who live in the Madison area or at a distance. The program can be completed in as little as two years with full time enrollment or in three to four years with part-time enrollment. Some classes are online, while others are conveniently scheduled one day a week or during late afternoon sessions.
University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh
The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Family Nurse Practitioner MSN curriculum is suitable for distance learning students who can come to campus on occasion. Many courses in the curriculum are offered online and other classes do not meet on campus every week. As of 2010, a new doctor of nursing practice program is also available through online and hybrid learning formats.
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
RNs who already hold a master's in nursing may be interested in the post-master's online doctor of nursing practice offered at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. This clinically focused, part-time terminal degree program includes family nurse practitioner as a specialization option. The program requires a 460-hour clinical residency.
