Do A Male Breast Exam

Do a Male Breast Exam

Most people know that women should perform monthly breast self-examinations. However, men should also perform monthly breast exams. By performing a male breast exam, the male can take note of any changes in his breast, such as lumps or puckering. If these changes are due to male breast cancer, the male breast exam can be life saving. Follow these steps to successfully perform a male breast exam.

Instructions

1. Pick a day every month on which to do your male breast exam. This will make it easier for you to remember to do this important exam every month.

2. Choose one breast to start with. If you have selected the right breast to start with, place your right arm up and over your head. Rest your right hand on the back of your neck or head for support. Place the middle three fingers of your left hand flat on your right breast. Move these fingers around your entire breast in small, circular motions. Be sure to feel the entire breast from the outer breast all the way to the nipple.

3. Look for any bumps or lumps that you feel in your breast as you perform Step 2. Pay extra attention to those lumps or bumps that feel hard and are painless.

4. Squeeze the nipple of the breast you chose in Step 2. Do this gently with two of your fingers. Take note if you see any discharge from the nipple upon squeezing it.

5. Repeat Steps 2 to 4 for the other breast. For the left breast, be sure to place your left arm over your head as described in Step 2 and to use the fingers on your right hand to feel your breast for lumps.

6. Examine both of your breasts in a mirror. Look for any changes in the size or shape of your breasts. Also, look for any changes in the texture of the breast such as dimpling, puckering or unusual redness. Carefully look at your nipples as well. Determine if your nipples point inward, known as retraction.
