Michigan Ultrasound Colleges

The job of an ultrasound technician or sonographer is to capture internal images that can then be analyzed by a physician. As a result, ultrasound technicians need to be well versed in the operation and maintenance of all the equipment required to create ultrasound images. The training for an ultrasound technician takes two years and is available at a number of community and technical colleges in Michigan.


Ferris State University


Ferris State University is located in Big Rapids, Michigan. The university offers a 2-year associates program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Students in this program complete a general education curriculum that includes English, math, history and science courses before moving on to the more technical career related courses. Once these prerequisites have been completed, introduction sonography classes are offered. Finally, students move on to advanced sonography classes and participate in clinical internships that teach them operate the imaging equipment.

Lansing Community College


Lansing Community College is located in Lansing, Michigan and has a student population of around 19,000. The college offers an Associates of Applied Sciences degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. This program takes around two years to complete and includes both general education and technical classes. Some of the classes included in the curriculum are Sonographic Scanning, Sonographic Physics, Instrumentation, and Sonographic Positioning. In addition to these courses, students must participate in two internships at a hospital or other health clinic.

Oakland Community College


Oakland Community College is located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and offers an Associate of Applied Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography degree. However, unlike traditional Associate programs, the Oakland Community College Diagnostic Medical Sonography program requires two and a half years to complete. This is because the program requires 73 completed credit hours instead of the usual 60. While the program does take longer than most to finish, the extra 13 credit hours allow students to further master Sonography. Some of the additional courses include Cross-sectional Anatomy, Medical Law and Ethics, Professional Communication, and Physics Applied to Health and Anatomy.
