Get Broadband Access

Broadband Internet access is often referred to as "high speed" because it allows computers to communicate with the Web at much higher speeds than the previous standard method, dial-up. If you want to get broadband Internet access in your home you will need to find a company that acts as a service provider in your area. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use the "Check Availability" or "Availability Locator" function on the website of a broadband service provider to find out if that company offers service at your address. For example, Verizon FiOS and AT&T both offer online utilities that can check for availability of broadband at your address in seconds. This can help narrow down your service provider choices as some may not be available where you actually live.

2. Look for package deals to help decrease the overall monthly price of your service. Internet service providers often offer package deals that decrease the price of broadband Internet if you also sign up for cable or satellite television and/or home telephone service at the same time. Signing up for a bundle will be cheaper than if you purchase multiple services individually from different companies.

3. Call the customer support service for your chosen broadband provider (available on the provider's website) and set up an appointment to have service installed. Inform the customer service representative of exactly how many computers are in your home, as this will affect the overall price of your installation. Installing a modem for one computer, for example, will be cheaper than installing a modem, a router and connections for five computers.
