Army Training Information

Soldiers may drive or maintain these vehichles.

U.S. Army basic combat training is held at a number of different bases. The one you attend is usually determined by where in the country you enlisted in the Army. It takes nine weeks, and only accepts U.S. citizens and permanent residents between the ages of 17 and 41 who are healthy, of sound moral character and with a high school diploma or GED. It is divided into phases: a reception week, a Red Phase, White Phase and Blue Phase, followed by graduation.

Reception Week

Most of your time in reception week will be spent waiting in line. You will do a physical test-which involves sit-ups, push-ups, and a run-that will be repeated multiple times over the course of basic training to track your progress. You will also be given medical tests, dental checkups and a haircut in addition to stacks of paperwork.

Red Phase

During Red Phase, you will have a combination of physical, tactical and academic training. You will be given another physical test similar to the one in reception week, in addition to rappelling down the confidence tower.

In tactical training, you will learn-through hands-on, simulated exercises-defend yourself from nuclear, biological and chemical attacks.

Academically, you will learn about Army heritage, rank structure, and the Seven Core Values of the U.S. Army: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. These values neatly sum up what is expected of soldiers in the Army.

White Phase

The White Phase starts after approximately two weeks. You will learn more advanced combat skills. This will involve going through war-fighting exercises like you did in the nuclear and chemical training simulations, but with more advanced skills, like hand-to-hand combat and situational training such as clearing buildings.

You will also learn clean, maintain and fire your weapon during this phase. Expect a lot of repetition, learning aim, breathe and stand by repeating the necessary actions thousands of times before you fire off a single round.

The six-mile tactical foot march will also be introduced during this phase.

Blue Phase

This is where you will learn and apply more advanced skills. Having mastered the rifle, you will move onto using hand grenades and automatic weapons. You will also learn to apply these skills through simulated exercises: a night infiltration mission will happen during this phase, as will a multiple-day mission in the woods.

There are two tactical foot marches during this phase: a six-mile and 10-mile, which requires better preparation than you probably expected.

Graduation

With the three phases complete, it is time to put on your uniform and graduate as a soldier in the Army. Look back at what you've accomplished and take some pride in your work.

After Basic

Now that you're a soldier, it's time to specialize in a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS). Depending on what you chose with your recruiter, you will go to one of many Advanced Individual Training (AIT) schools, where you will learn maintain trucks, be an infantryman, input data, fight fires or any of the other hundreds of jobs the U.S. Army offers.
