Breast Lump Information

A breast lump refers to a mass or swelling that develops in the breast from a growth of tissue. In most cases, a breast lump forms from a benign (non-cancerous) condition.

Size and Shape

Breast lumps can be various sizes and may or may not have distinct borders or a round shape. Some lumps may also appear harder or more movable than others.

Appearance

Usually you cannot see a breast lump; however, they are sometimes accompanied by nipple discharge, redness or swelling.

Pain

Pain does not always accompany breast lumps. A very painful breast---especially with inflammation---should be brought to a doctor's attention immediately.

Cause

Breast lumps can be caused by a number of things, including fibrocystic breast disease, fibroadenomas, injury, illness or simply hormonal fluctuations.

Breast Cancer

Breast cancer actually forms within the cells of the breast. Though a lump could indicate cancer, more often it is from a benign condition.

Considerations

Any lump---especially one that is unusual from what is felt most of the time---should be evaluated by a physician.
