CME, or Continuing Medical Education Credits, are ongoing educational credits that physicians must earn in order to keep their licenses current. There are many ways for physicians to go about earning CMEs to keep up with state guidelines. The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education mission is to provide the opportunity for additional education. Each state has its own medical boards that review guidelines and continuing education to determine if a doctor's license should stay current.
Instructions
1. Attend events where CME credits are offered as part of attendance. Medical conferences are regularly scheduled all across the US that strive to educate attendees by addressing current issues such as new medical research, pharmaceutical research, medical law and regulations and new practice management tools. Such conferences are often sponsored by local medical schools.
2. Study online. Some organizations offer online coursework to earn your CME credits. This is great for those that need the flexibility to earn CMEs on their own time. Online access also allows you to pick from a variety of choices for classes. Contacting your local medical school, or the one you may have graduated from, is a great first step to finding online options.
3. Study at home. There are many opportunities for you to earn your CME from home. The New England Journal of Medicine, Journal Watch Women's Health, and Journal Watch Psychiatry are just some of the programs that are available in a home study format.
4. Teach other medical professionals. If you have an area of expertise or a new finding that you would like to share, you can offer a class or lecture and obtain CME credits as well. You will need to become accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, and that organization will offer credits each time you present or teach a class.
