Become A Registered Radiographer In Missouri

Radiographers specialize in medical areas ranging from prenatal care to orthopedics.

Radiologic technologists produce images of the human body using medical imaging equipment. They work alongside physicians and nurses in hospitals, clinics and outpatient facilities. A registered radiographer has met educational and ethical requirements, obtained certification and/or satisfied state licensing requirements.

The majority of states require a license. However, Missouri does not. Aspiring radiographers in Missouri must graduate from an accredited radiography program that prepares them for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam. The ARRT is the national organization that oversees the certification and registration process for radiographers.

Instructions

1. Take high school courses in math, science and oral/written communications. Graduate from high school. Obtain a GED if you don't graduate from high school. Provide proof of your high school diploma or GED when applying to radiography programs.

2. Enroll in a radiography program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. Colorado Technical University, Missouri Southern State University and St. John's Regional Health Center are a few of the institutions offering these programs. Radiography programs last two to four years. Contact the admissions office for enrollment information. Graduate from the program with a certificate, associate's degree or bachelor's degree.

3. Take the ARRT certification exam. Download and read the "Radiography Certification Handbook." The handbook provides information ranging from scheduling the exam to preparing for it. Pearson VUE administers the exam at its testing centers in Columbia, Springfield, St. Louis and Kansas City. Pass the exam with a minimum score of 75.

4. Receive your certification from the ARRT once you pass the exam. When you receive your certification, you're automatically registered with ARRT. Renew your registration each year by taking continuing education classes and complying with ARRT standards of ethics.
