Introduction To Digital Radiography

Digital radiography is used primarily within the medical field in areas such as dentistry and medical imaging. Computer technology is used in digital radiography to capture, display, enhance and store radiographic images.

Types

Digital radiography is typically carried out by two different types of systems: direct and indirect" Direct digital radiography systems send information directly to a computer through wireless or wire transmissions. Indirect radiography systems use phosphor storage plates (PSP) to make images and the images are inserted into a scanning device before they are sent to a computer.

Simplification

X-ray film processing uses radiation and is a standard method for taking and displaying images for the purpose of diagnosing and treating patients. Digital radiography eliminates problems with processing images such as working with chemical substances, maintaining proper processing temperatures and eliminating exposure to radiation. Digital radiography has the potential to eliminate or reduce the need of X-ray film.

Benefits

Digital radiography offers benefits such as eliminating film costs for radiological facilities or departments, allowing doctors to quickly diagnose patients since they do not have to wait for development of film, allows for simultaneous viewing of images by health care providers in different locations and is easily replicated for backup and storage.
