Pick A Dental Plan

Picking a dental plan may take some time.

Today's American world revolves around insurance. Because of this, there are many different types of dental plans available for individuals and families to choose from. It can be difficult to know which plan to choose. Most individuals have the choice between Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), Dental Maintenance Organization (referred to as DMO or DHMO) and discount plans.

Instructions

1. Read the plan descriptions thoroughly. Consider the number of individuals that will be covered on the plan. Write down a rough dental history for each individual. Compare each dental history to the plans offered in order to determine whether or not the plan would have been beneficial to you during the time of the dental work.

2. Determine whether or not you or your covered family members need to see a dentist more than the average person (usually because of poor dental health and other problems), an average amount of visits per year or less. If you or your family members tend to have a lot of dentist visits throughout the year, along with dental emergencies, look into a PPO plan, because dentists who accept HMO tend to have limited scheduling space.

3. Narrow the plans down to one or two. Consider the age of the individuals who will need to be covered in your family. If you have children who are older, you may already be familiar with their dental history and can determine whether or not better dental insurance should be used. For younger children, it's always better to receive more coverage because dental emergencies and other issues may come up that you can't foresee. If you are a single individual with a good dental history (history of little or no cavities, etc), you might consider a discount plan. These plans are not as thorough as PPO or DMO plans, but they can be used for individuals who visit the dentist regularly, have a decent income (or savings to cover dental costs) and wish to only use the plan once or twice a year.
