What Is Normal In Perimenopause

Periomenopause symptoms can put a woman on edge

Periomenopause occurs a decade or more before the onset of menopause itself. While sometimes inconvenient, most symptoms are part of a natural process. Knowing what's normal will relieve some of the stress.

Mental and Emotional

Depression, mood swings and irritability are experienced by many women during periomenopause. Irritability may be a side effect of insomnia caused by night sweats and hot flashes. Dropping hormone levels also may affect mood. However, these symptoms may be due to other life factors.

Physical

Dropping estrogen levels are associated with bone loss, which may progress to osteoporosis. Cholesterol levels may increase. Bladder infections may become more frequent. Menstrual cycles change, often becoming more frequent with a heavier flow and increased cramping.

Sexual

A dropping estrogen level often means a decrease in libido. Vaginal lubrication may also decrease. Using a personal lubricant can alleviate vaginal dryness during intercourse.
