Georgia colleges and universities


There are many colleges and universities in Georgia, and finding the right one might take a few visits. Going to campuses and talking to advisers, professors and counselors is a good way to learn more about schools and to get a feel for the campus life. Take your time and find a school that seems like the best fit for you.


University of Georgia


The University of Georgia is located in Athens, Georgia. It was established in 1801 and was the first university in the country to be chartered by the state. It was built on 633 acres of land running alongside the Oconee River. The university has 16 schools established within, including the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Pharmacy, the College of Education and the College of Veterinary Medicine.


As of 2010, the University of Georgia neared 35,000 students (both undergraduate and graduate) and is home to more than 600 student organizations. It was ranked 21st in U.S. News & World Report's "Best Colleges" edition in 2010.


Georgia State University


Georgia State is one of the top urban research institutions in the Southeastern states. It was established in 1913 and is located in the state capital of Atlanta. The university offers 55 degree programs in six colleges and has nearly 40,000 students enrolled in 2010. GSU also has 16 Division I NCAA teams.


Georgia Tech


The Georgia Institute of Technology is also located in Atlanta. It is hailed as one of the nation's top research universities and houses 20,000 students. It was founded in 1885 and opened three years later, enrolling 84 students. In its first 50 years of operation, it went from a small trade school to a regionally recognized technical institute. It was the first Southern university to enroll African American students without a court order and started allowing women through its doors in 1952. The university offers six different colleges and 109 degree plans.
