Phlebotomy Technician Certification Programs In Los Angeles

A type of allied health care professional, phlebotomists draw blood samples from patients for diagnostic medical testing or for blood donation. To become a phlebotomy technician in the state of California, individuals must complete a certification training program approved by the California Department of Public Health. The city of Los Angeles is home to a number of approved programs, which are found primarily at career and technical colleges and schools.


LA Vocational Institute


Located in the western Wiltshire section of Los Angeles, LA Vocational Institute is a private school for health care technician and massage therapy training, offering programs in other fields like ultrasound, nursing and medical assisting as well. The school offers a short-term phlebotomy training program that includes classroom courses in anatomy and laboratory practice drawing blood samples. Students may enroll in classes on a full- or part-time basis and must complete 115 hours of training to graduate. The school participates in lending programs with a number of private lenders and is approved for veteran's benefits to help offset the cost of tuition. In addition, students may take advantage of payment plans through the school. Job placement assistance is available for all graduates.

Central Nursing College


Also located in Wiltshire, Central Nursing College has provided nursing and health training programs in western Los Angeles since 1985. The college's certified nurse assisting program is approved by the California Department of Health to prepare students for phlebotomy certification. The program requires 172 hours to complete, 100 of which are spent in Los Angeles medical facilities receiving hands-on training with patients. The entire program is completable with six weeks of full-time study. In addition to phlebotomy techniques, students also study interpersonal skills, weights and measures, vital signs, nutrition, emergency procedures and long-term patient care. Vocational rehabilitation grants are the only source of aid available to students at Central Nursing College. Job placement assistance is provided through the school.

California Technical Education College


A Wiltshire-based vocational school, California Technical Education College was established in 1999. The school offers a 40-hour, four-week phlebotomy technician program. The college's average class size is 10 to 16 students, allowing for a high-degree of individual attention from instructors. Among the topics covered by the curriculum are medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, infection control, patient identification, skin site preparation, blood collection equipment and waste disposal. Hands-on training is completed in the school's medical laboratories. Financial aid is not available through the college. The college's Job Placement Assistance Office matches employers with qualified graduates, assists students with job searches and provides help with resume writing as needed.
