Ovarian cysts are fluid filled sacks that form on or within your ovaries. Most ovarian cysts are harmless unless they rupture and many women will have at least one during their lifetime. While there is no way to prevent ovarian cysts, there are things you can do to diagnose them before they become problematic. Read on to learn prevent ovarian cysts.

1. Familiarize yourself with the symptoms. Symptoms include menstrual irregularities, pelvic and abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness and pressure on your rectum or bladder. If you experience any of these symptoms especially right before or right after your period, contact your gynecologist.


2. Schedule routine pelvic exams. Regular pelvic exams will allow your doctor to monitor changes in an ovarian cysts and will ensure diagnosis of problematic cysts as early as possible.


3. Take birth control pills. Birth control pills have been proven to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer and reduce the risk of ovarian cysts developing during your menstrual cycle.
