Instructions

1. Download a template from Microsoft (Microsoft.com). Its website has free downloads and you can then update and adjust the template to meet your needs.

2. If you prefer to create your own template, launch Microsoft Word. From the "File" menu, select "Page Setup." Click the "Landscape" icon from the Orientation section and click "OK."

3. Separate your document into three columns so that you can enter information into each one. From the "Format" menu, select "Columns" and "Three" to set up your document for three columns. Click "OK." At the top of the page in the ruler area, there are blue stops. These indicate where your column breaks are.

4. Begin creating your tri-fold brochure. Bear in mind that you'll need two total pages to create the outside and inside of your brochure. If you start work on the outside of your brochure first, remember that the front page of your brochure will actually be the right column on the screen. The middle column is your back page and the left column is the first page that people see when they open your brochure.

5. Use tools like text boxes and pictures to format and create your brochure. You can use the "Insert" menu to insert text boxes and pictures.

6. After you are done creating the first page of your brochure, select "Break" and "Page Break" from the "Insert" menu. A new page will appear and you can then create the inside of your brochure. Remember that the inside of your brochure will appear just as it looks on the screen; the reader will read it from left to right.

7. When you are done creating your brochure, you can either choose to print it on your own printer or you can save the file to disk and bring it to a print shop. If you're printing it yourself, you should print one side at a time, unless you have a printer with double-sided print capabilities. When you print, print the first page first. Start by printing one copy to test the appearance. Then place the same paper back in the printer to print the second side. You may have to do this a few times to get the format correct.
