Ultrasound sonography is a medical imaging field.
The field of medical ultrasonography utilizes sound waves to produce images that allow doctors to assess and diagnose various illnesses, injuries and other medical conditions, according to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics. Training as an ultrasound sonographer may be obtained through on-the-job training or through formal programs at educational institutions, including vocational or technical schools, community colleges, and traditional four-year colleges and universities.

Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences offers students the option of pursuing either a bachelor of science degree in diagnostic medical sonography (BSDMS) through its online distance-learning program, or an associate of science degree in diagnostic medical sonography (ASDMS) through its resident program. Students may pursue a general ultrasound track or a cardiovascular ultrasound track. Coursework includes classes in biology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and medical terminology. The Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Newbridge College
Newbridge College offers a 72-week diploma program in ultrasound diagnostic medical sonography. The program includes didactic classroom instruction combined with hands-on clinical training in ultrasound theory and technique. Coursework is designed to prepare ultrasound sonographers to use sophisticated ultrasound imaging equipment to perform basic diagnostic studies of a patient's anatomy as ordered by a physician. Graduates should be qualified to sit for examination and certification by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

The Allied Health Division of Hunter Business School offers a diploma program in diagnostic medical sonography. This 2442-hour, 20-month course of study is designed to provide students with a comprehensive educational background in ultrasound sonography. Coursework includes instruction and hands-on experience in abdominal sonography, ob/gyn sonography, echocardiography, small parts sonography, neonatal neurosonography and other areas. Students are exposed to ultrasound sonography in a variety of clinical settings. Graduates of the program are qualified to sit for certification examination by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
