A diagnostic medical sonographer performs various tests by using ultrasound recordings to determine abnormalities in areas such as the gall bladder, kidneys, and other organs. To start a career as a diagnostic sonographer, a person will either have to obtain an associate degree in applied science in diagnostic medical sonography or an advance technical certificate if a person already has a bachelor's degree in science. Although many colleges have different requirements to satisfy a degree or certificate in this field, there are several classes that are required in the diagnostic medical sonography program.
Anatomy and Physiology I & II
Anatomy and Physiology I focus on the functions of cells and tissues in the human body, as well as the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems. Anatomy and Physiology II is a continuation of Anatomy and Physiology I, as the course focus on other systems in the body, including digestive, urinary and reproductive systems.
Introduction to Medical Sonography
This course introduces the world of sonography and what a person will expect with a position as a sonographer. Topics in the course will include ethical and legal views in the sonography field, accreditation and professional organizations associated with sonography.
Medical Terminology
Medical Terminology provides students with the basic understanding of various terms related to the medical field. Subjects in the course consist of recognition, definition, proper spelling and structure.
Sonography of Obstetrics/Gynecology
Students will learn the different techniques in scanning procedures, including examining the pelvis, following up on a patient's history, and knowing certain practices related to scanning.
Advanced Ultrasound Principles and Instrumentation
Advanced Ultrasound Principles and Instrumentation examines the philosophy and functions of using ultrasound practices on patients under a physician's care. Students will understand the proper use of various ultrasound technologies, as well as what to expect when dealing with patients during the screening process.
