Sonographers operate the diagnostic equipment used to provide images to physicians, in order to diagnose patient problems within the body. Many DMS programs are offered at community colleges and private colleges in the Chicago area. According to Indeed.com, the average salary for sonographers in the Chicago area is $72,000 a year.


PC Center Training Institute


PC Center Training Institute is a private vocational school located in the metropolitan area of Chicago. PCCTI offers a fully accredited certificate program in diagnostic medical sonograhy. The 14-month program includes abdominal, gynecological, obstetrical and vascular sonography. Some of the classes in the program include anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, abdominal sonography, OB/GYN sonography and vascular sonography. Classes take place in classroom, lab and clinical settings. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to take the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography certification exam to become a licensed sonographer.

Triton College


Triton College is a private two-year college located in the Chicago suburb of River Grove. Triton offers a fully accredited diagnostic medical sonography program that will lead to an associate degree in sonography. Graduates qualify to take the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography certification exam to become a licensed sonographer. Some of the classes in the program are pathology and diagnostic sonography, principles of computerized sonography, ultrasound film critique, ultrasound physics, abdominal sonography and OB/GYN sonography. Students also participate in an internship for real-life experience. This is a 68 credit hour program that generally takes about two years to complete.

Harper College


Harper College is located in Palatine, Illinois, which is a suburb of Chicago located 25 miles northwest of downtown. Harper is a two-year junior college that offers a fully accredited diagnostic medical sonography program. This is a 65 credit hour program that will lead to an associate degree in DMS. It generally takes about two years to graduate from this program, and students are required to complete 720 hours of internship during the course of the program. Some of the classes in the program include introduction to ultrasound, essentials of vascular sonography, ultrasound physics and instrumentation, essentials of abdominal and small parts sonography and basic health care skills. Graduates of this program will be able to take the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography certification exam to become a licensed sonographer.
