The Young Scholars Summer Camp Youth Program is an eight-week camp held on the campus of Los Angeles Southwest College. The program features academic classes in the mornings and workshops in the afternoons, four days a week. On Fridays, campers go on field trips.
Los Angeles Southwest College
Los Angeles Southwest College (LASC) is a community college at 1600 W. Imperial Highway, Los Angeles, California. Established in 1967 by an act of the Los Angeles Board of Education, the college opened that fall with 22 full-time faculty members and 600 students. Since then, enrollment has grown to more than 6,000 students.
Location and Mission
LASC is adjacent to Inglewood and Watts, and many of its students come to the college from those and other nearby communities. The academic mission of the college is to prepare students academically, so they can transfer into programs at four-year colleges, enter technical schools, and/or pursue continuing education throughout their lives and careers.
In addition to academic endeavors, the college leaders have worked to develop LASC into a resource for the community. This includes partnerships with agencies in the communities and with local schools.
Young Scholars Summer Camp Youth Program
Among the community services that LASC provides is its Young Scholars Summer Camp Youth Program, offered to students in first through eighth grades. The Enrichment Program, which starts at 8 a.m. and runs until noon, covers math, reading, science and English. After an hour lunch break, campers take part in one of the workshops, which include dance, arts and crafts, and sports. The afternoon workshops last until 5 p.m. Campers must choose one workshop for the entire eight-week period. Participants can also elect to come for half-day sessions.
Schedule, Duration, Amenities
The camp runs on this schedule Mondays through Thursdays from mid-June till mid-August. As part of their enrollment, campers get hot lunches and snacks Monday through Thursday, and snacks and sack lunches on Fridays for field trips.
To enroll a child in the program, call the Community Services department of LASC at (323) 241-5288.
