Boston College: Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling
Boston College offers a master's program in mental health counseling through its school of education. This program's faculty productivity was rated number one in the country by The Chronicle of Higher Education. There are two programs offered in mental health counseling. One of them, a 60-credit program, meets the state's prerequisites for becoming a licensed counselor in Massachusetts. The other program, a 48-credit program, does not meet the state's prerequisites for becoming a licensed counselor. Therefore, students usually only choose the 48-credit program if they are planning to continue and get their doctorate. Both programs last for two years, but the 60-credit students must take summer courses. According to the Boston College website, the first year of the program consists of a practicum and academic courses, and the second year of the program consists mostly of completing an internship and finishing up any needed academic course credits. Upon completion of the program, many students go on to get a state counseling license and work in clinics, schools or open a private practice.
