Avoid Uterine Fibroid Surgery

Uterine fibroids are very common. In fact, many women have them, yet are never bothered with symptoms and may not know they have fibroids until an ultrasound or other examination finds them. There are many treatments for uterine fibroids, from medications to surgical procedures. Fortunately, surgery often isn't necessary.

Instructions

Avoid Uterine Fibroid Surgery

1. Watch and wait. This approach is best when fibroids cause few or no problems. If yours are in that category, the best approach may be to do nothing at all.

2. Take oral contraceptives, with your doctor's approval, if your main problem with uterine fibroids is bleeding. Birth control pills won't shrink the tumors but will relieve heavy bleeding. Another option with the same effect is a progestin-releasing intrauterine device, or IUD.

3. Take gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists or Gn-RH agonists, to stop your menstrual cycles, allowing estrogen and progesterone levels to fall and diminish the bleeding, pain and pressure associated with fibroids, and help shrink the tumors.

4. Take Danazol, a male hormone. This will stop periods and shrink fibroids.

5. Consider focused ultrasound surgery. Even though it is technically surgery, it is considered noninvasive and has the advantage of preserving the uterus for those who are still considering childbirth.
