Several new medical imaging technologies have been introduced over the last few decades, including computerized tomography, advanced diagnostic sonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI is particularly popular because it uses non-ionizing radiation in scanning (and is thus safer) and can be used to give physicians a wide variety of internal views of the body. MRI devices are, however, very expensive, and MRI technologists require a lot of training and experience to produce the most useful scans.
Instructions
1. Earn an associate's degree or bachelor's degree in radiology or radiologic technology with a specialization in MRI. This is the minimum educational requirement to sit for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam.
2. Undertake your ARRT MRI certification. You must complete the educational requirements and meet the ethics standards (including no criminal record) as well as pass the certifying exam to earn an ARRT MRI certification.
3. Become licensed to practice as an MRI technologist in your state as required. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, most states require MRI technologists to be licensed to practice there, but the licensing exam is frequently based on the ARRT certification exam.
4. Complete at least 24 hours hours of MRI technology-related continuing classes every two years to maintain your ARRT certification.
