Ultrasound technicians are also known as diagnostic medical sonographers. Sonographers use ultrasound imaging equipment to obtain images of areas within the body. These images are used by physicians to diagnose problems that patients may be having. In Texas, many DMS programs can be found at private and community colleges. According to Indeed.com, the median annual salary for ultrasound technicians in Texas is $61,000 as of May 2010.


Virginia College


Virginia College is a private college in Austin. VC offers an accredited, 104-credit diagnostic medical sonography program. This is an associate degree program that takes two to three years to finish. The program combines classroom lectures, labs and a 360-hour clinical internship. Some of the classes in this program are introduction to ultrasound scanning, hemodynamic principles, abdominal, obstetrical, and vascular scanning, ultrasound physics and pathophysiology for ultrasound. General education classes are also a part of the curriculum. Graduates will have the necessary skills to pass national certification exams to become a licensed sonographer.

St Philip's College


St Philip's College is a part of the Alamo Colleges system, which is a collection of two-year community colleges located throughout the San Antonio area. The diagnostic medical sonography program at St. Philip's is fully accredited by the Texas Board of Higher Education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This is an associate degree program and the curriculum is mixed with general education and core subject classes. Some of the core subject classes include abdominopelvic sonography, basic ultrasound physics, techniques of medical sonography, doppler physics and introduction to vascular technology. Graduates of this program will be eligible to take the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) certification exam to become licensed.

Weatherford College


Weatherford College is in Weatherford, Texas, which is just west of the Dallas/Ft Worth area. This public community college offers a 72-credit diagnostic medical sonography program. This fully accredited program will prepare students for a career in sonography and will prepare graduates to take the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) certification exam to become a licensed sonographer. Some of the coursework includes sonographic sectional anatomy, basic ultrasound physics, sonographic superficial structures, principles of vascular technology and sonography of obstetrics/gynecology. After graduation, graduates will have an opportunity to take a 24-credit certificate program in advanced cardiac sonography. It generally takes two years to complete this program.
