Advantages & Disadvantages Of Digital Publishing

Digital publishing provides the reader with more space.

Digital publishing, also known as E-book publishing, provides the reader with an instant, digital book to read on a computer, smart phone or E-book reader. E-books are available for purchase at online book stores as well as the author's own website. E-books are now obtainable for most bestselling books as well as books written by authors who write exclusively digital works.

Cost

One advantage to digital publishing is that it costs significantly less to both publish and distribute an E-book. You will also be saving the reader money on delivery charges as the E-book download following purchase is instant and electronic. However, the low cost is also a disadvantage to the author as E-books will be sold for less, which means the author receives less from each book that is sold.

Environment

One of the main advantages of digital publishing is the positive impact it has on the environment. Not only will you be saving thousands of trees by not having the book published on paper, but there are also benefits to having electronic transfers of E-books. You will now be cutting back on the amount of delivery trucks creating smog and pollution as they deliver books in print.

Availability

The availability of digital publishing is both an advantage and disadvantage to the author. It is now easier than ever to get a book published. Just about anyone can get their E-book published with minimal cost, no matter the quality of the book. Authors who might have been denied by editors and publishing companies now have the option to publish digitally. However, due to the availability and the ease in which any author can publish, it will now be harder to get noticed. Among the thousands of authors publishing E-books, your book may quickly get lost in the shuffle.

Preference

Reader's preference between digital and print books can act as both an advantage and a disadvantage. Many readers enjoy E-books that are transferred to mobile phones and E-book readers as they don't take up bookshelf space and cost less. These readers also enjoy the ability to bookmark the last page read and change the font size. However, authors will be at a disadvantage as many readers still prefer to hold printed books and add them to their home library.
