Illinois is home to a number of ultrasound tech schools.
A number of schools in Illinois offer programs in diagnostic medical sonography, a field the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts will grow by 18 percent from 2008 through 2018. These schools carry approval from the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Programs, allowing graduates to fulfill the education requirements for voluntary certification through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Illinois' ultrasound tech schools combine classroom lectures with hands-on practice and are found in locations throughout the state.
Rush University Medical Center
Located to the north of downtown Chicago, Rush University is a private college affiliated with Rush University Medical Center, a 671-bed general hospital. Approximately 1,800 students attend medical courses at the hospital facility. The school's Bachelor of Science in diagnostic medical sonography program requires students to have 60 semester or 90 quarter hours of general education coursework from an accredited community or traditional college. The diagnostic medical sonography program requires 21 months of full-time study and focuses on vascular ultrasound. Students have the option to complete their clinical rotations at the Medical Center, at other Chicago hospitals or even outside of the state. Limited housing is available for students at the school, and the school participates in federal financial aid programs.

College of DuPage
With more than 30,000 students, the College of DuPage is the second largest post-secondary institution in Illinois and the third largest single-campus community college in the state. Unlike other ultrasound programs in Illinois, DuPage's Associate of Applied Science allows students to study three specialties within the field: abdominal and superficial structures, obstetrics and gynecology, and vascular imaging. The program takes two years of full-time study to complete, and to be considered for admission, students must possess CPR certification and pass both a criminal background check and drug test. Students complete six clinical rotations as well as a number of laboratory classes. Financial aid, career placement services, health care and mental health counseling are all available for students.
