Fellowship Meal Ideas

Your church fellowship dinner can include a message to relate the events to faith.

Fellowship dinners give church and community members the opportunity to strengthen their relationships with God and each other while they enjoy a delicious meal. But a fellowship meal is not just about food: it's about worship and fellowship, getting to know the members of your congregation, and creating a closer relationship with God. Does this Spark an idea?

Food

The most critical component of a fellowship meal is, of course, the meal. What you choose to serve and how you choose to serve it depends on your congregation, your budget and your desires. You could host a potluck, where church members each bring a dish to contribute to the meal. Catering is also an option. Organizing a meal team to prepare a complete meal for the group works well if some congregation members really enjoy cooking. In any case, the meal should account for the attendees' needs and include a soup or salad, entrees, side dishes, a dessert and beverages.

Fellowship

The fellowship meal should provide the opportunity for congregation members to socialize with one another. Church members might see each other only on service days; the meal is a chance for them to discuss community events or their children's school progress. Ensure that there's enough time over the course of the event that members can speak to one another, whether that time is before the meal, during it or afterward.

Message

A fellowship meal should include a message or Bible passage delivered from the church's pastor or another church leader. The message can take the form of a lesson, as would be presented at a regular church service, or it can be more informal, such as a story or a short address. If there are a lot of children in attendance, consider hosting a separate event for them so that they do not disrupt the message for the adults.

Activities

You can plan activities to take place during a fellowship meal to keep both the adults and the children entertained. You can have the church band, a praise team, or a local Christian band provide music, or you can have the children's choir prepare a number to present to the congregation. You can plan games for the children, including scavenger hunts and outdoor relays.
