Ultrasound programs, also known as sonography programs, teach students use sound waves to produce medical images for treatment and diagnosis. Careers in sonography are rewarding to those who enter the field. Georgia has several technical colleges that offer two-year sonography programs. Only a few four-year colleges have sonography programs, or programs focusing on radiology and radiologic technology that prepare students for careers in sonography.
Medical College of Georgia
The Medical College of Georgia is an accredited, four-year college that offers everything from certificates to doctoral degrees. It offers a two-year program in diagnostic medical sonography in which students are awarded a certification in diagnostic medical sonography. The college has had this program since 1980. Students get classroom experience as well as hands-on experience in the field. Upon completion of the program, students are well-versed in sonography and are trained to work in several fields, including obstetrics, cardiology and urology. An example of the required courses include Sonographic Instrumentation, Cardiovascular Physics, Systemic Anatomy and a clinical internship.
Armstrong Atlantic State University
Armstrong Atlantic State University is an accredited, four-year college in Georgia. Students can earn anything from a certification to a master's degree. It does not offer a sonography program per se, but it does offer a bachelor's of science in radiological sciences. With this degree, students are prepared to work in several fields, including sonography, X-ray technology and radiological therapy. Students who complete the radiological sciences program are required to complete courses such as Patient Care and Interaction, Clinical Education, Cross Sectional Anatomy and Vascular Sonography.
Dalton State University
Dalton State University is an accredited, four-year college that offers certificates, and associate's and bachelor's degrees. Students who wish to pursue an education in sonography at Dalton State have a few options, depending on how much time they want to spend in school and how much they want to further their education. The programs offered provide not only in classroom education, but also combine hands-on training. Students can earn a certificate in radiologic technology. This is a two-year program that requires students to take classes such as Radiologic Procedures and Advanced Anatomy. Upon successful completion of this program, students may pursue careers such as that of a sonographer, X-ray technician and radiologist. Students interested in sonography may also study for an applied associate's degree in radiologic technology or an associate's of science in radiology.
Emory University
Emory University is an accredited, four-year university that offers certificates, and associate's, bachelor's and master's degrees in a variety of fields. Students who want to become sonographers can enroll in the radiologic technology program through the university's school of medicine. The school is one of the few in the country that offers a four-year bachelor's degree in radiologic technology. To complete the program, students must complete classes such as Anatomy, Physiology and Computer Applications in Medical Imaging with a final grade of at least "B" or above. Students who complete the four-year program can pursue such jobs as a sonographer, X-ray technician and radiological therapist.
