Georgia's Medicaid covers expenses such as inpatient hospital services.
Georgia administers Medicaid through its Department of Community Health and helps certain low-income residents pay for part or all of their medical expenses. Georgia encourages individuals to apply to its Medicaid program, which is paid for with federal and state tax dollars, if their income is low and the applicant: is a child or teenager, is aged 65 or older, is legally blind, has a disability, needs a nursing home or thinks she is pregnant.
Eligibility
Eligibility for Georgia's Medicaid program depends on various factors such as age, pregnancy, disability, blindness, income and assets, and U.S. citizenship status. A Medicaid handbook distributed by the state provides that different qualifying groups maintain their own income limits. For example, in 2007, a pregnant mother with one child was eligible if her monthly income was below $2,862; a pregnant woman with two children needed an income below $3,442.
Application
Applications for Georgia's Medicaid program may be made in person at the applicant's local Division of Family and Children Services, health department or Social Security office. Georgia's DCH advises applicants to bring with them: proof of their identity and citizenship; their Social Security number; pay records (such as pay stubs) or recent W-2s; current health insurance cards or policies; recent bank records; and/or information on any property the applicant owns.
Using Georgia's Medicaid
Applicants who are eligible for Georgia's Medicaid program will receive a Medicaid card in the mail. The card may be used at "Georgia Families" or by any health care provider who accepts Medicaid. The Georgia Families program is offered by DCH in conjunction with private care management organizations to certain Medicaid recipients. Members may select health plans that fit their needs.
Medicaid Coverage
Georgia's Medicaid covers expenses such as doctors visits, prescription drugs, inpatient hospital services, outpatient hospital services (non-overnight stays), use of an ambulance and medical equipment prescribed for home use. Certain preventative and emergency dental care is also covered.
