Medicare Part
D is a prescription benefit.
Medicare is the largest medical insurance agency in the United States designed for those who qualify. If you are over 65 and are a permanent resident in the U.S., chances are you do qualify for Medicare. Medicare offers four basic benefits that can help save money on medical expenses.
Part A Benefit
Medicare Part A insurance provides hospital coverage to permanent residents over 65 and some younger who have certain disabilities. This coverage helps to pay for inpatient care at a hospital or skilled nursing facility. It also covers Hospice and home health care services. Those eligible typically do not have to pay premiums.
Part B Benefit
Part B is the medicare medical insurance coverage for those over 65 and permanent residents of the United States. It covers doctor visits, services needed for medical issues, preventive services, such as shots and cancer screening and ambulance services. Most people will pay a standard monthly premium amount, which is typically based on your income. In 2011 the standard monthly premium per month was $115.40 for those with income below $85,000 (see "Resources" for 2011 monthly medicare premiums).
Part C Benefit
Medicare Part C combines both Part A and Part B options. It is called the Medicare Advantage Plan, and it works almost like an HMO or PPO. When you are 65, a permanent resident and are able to receive Medicare Part C, usually through an approved private insurance company, it is a great benefit. This type of coverage generally is a lower cost alternative to the original Medicare programs, plus it usually covers prescription drugs (Part D).
Part D Benefit
Medicare Part D coverage is a prescription health care benefit. It helps seniors afford prescription drugs by allowing them to use generic versions when available. If the drugs fall into a prescribed class, then Part D covers most or all of it. Part D is not provided directly by the government so it's important to shop around for the best prices for each person's medical situation. If you are over 65 and are a permanent resident struggling financially you may be able to get help to pay for your prescription drugs. Call 1-800-MEDICARE.
