Medicare is government health insurance.
Medicare is the nation's largest health insurance program, covering more than 40 million Americans. The program provides medical coverage to the elderly, disabled and some people suffering serious health conditions. Medicare's hospital insurance cares for people who need treatment inside a hospital, while the program's medical insurance will pay for doctor visits and other routine care.
Age Requirement
People who are 65 and older are eligible to apply for Medicare. To qualify, the person must also receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits, which also kick in at age 65. They typically don't have to pay for hospital insurance because they paid taxes for the service when they were working. They do pay for medical insurance---In 2010, most paid $110.50 per year, but those with high incomes often pay higher rates.
Disability Eligibility
People who are younger than 65, but have some form of disability may also qualify for Medicare. Disabled people must have also received disability benefits for at least 24 months from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board.
End-Stage Renal Disease Eligibility
People who are younger than 65, but have been diagnosed with end-stage renal disease may also be eligible for Medicare. The disease involves kidney failure that requires dialysis or a kidney transplant.
