Neuro Interventional Radiologist Facts

Neurointerventional radiologists treat blood vessel conditions of the brain and spine.

Neurointerventional radiologists are board-certified physicians who use minimally invasive technologies to treat blood vessel conditions related to the brain, spinal cord, head and neck. They also perform procedures on the bones and joints of the spine.

Qualifications

Neurointerventional radiologists are certified in diagnostic radiology. After serving their residency and passing their state board's exam, they receive two to three years of specialized training in procedures that allow them to see and work within the blood vessels of the brain and spine.

Job Description

Working closely with other physicians such as neurologists, neurosurgeons and radiation oncologists, neurointerventional radiologists use microcatheters, balloons and stents to diagnose and treat aneurysms, blood clots, strokes, blood vessel malformations and tumors. They also perform kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty, procedures that inject a cement-like substance into the spine to stabilize fractures and reduce pain.

Salary

Jobs posted by RadWorking.com in 2010 indicate that interventional radiologist salaries can range from $250,000 to more than $600,000 annually. Positions in private practices may offer partnerships that typically pay more than faculty positions in teaching facilities. According to Radiology Today, demand and competition for neurointerventional radiologists is extremely high.
