New York teachers must be certified by the state.
A New York teaching certificate is required for the state's public school teachers, administrators, counselors and psychologists. There are several different paths to getting a New York teaching certificate but all have certain requirements in common.
Instructions
1. Assess your current credentials. If you have just graduated from high school, your path to getting a New York teaching certificate will be different from those of someone who already has a teaching certificate from another state.
2. Complete the required classes. High-school graduates must complete a bachelor's degree from an approved teacher education program. People with college degrees in another subject must complete a graduate degree from an approved teacher education program. People looking to change careers or who are from outside the United States can attend alternative teacher programs.
3. Choose which type of teaching certificate you want. You will need to pick an area of interest, such as administrator or classroom teacher. You will need to choose a subject area, such as social studies or students with disabilities. You also will need pick an age group, such as childhood (grades one to six) or adolescent (grades seven to 12).
4. Take the required tests. After completing required courses and/or degrees. or earning a license in another state, you will have to take the New York State Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST), the Assessment of Teaching Skills-Written (ATS-W) and the appropriate Content Specialty Tests (CST). Your Content Specialty Tests will help you earn the specific type of certificate you want.
5. Apply for the certificate. After completing the courses and tests, you must fill out an application.
6. Send in supporting documentation. After filling out your application, you will be told which supporting documentation is necessary. If you are earning your degree at a college in New York, your college will help you with this. Typically, the requirements will include college transcripts, exam score reports, documentation of paid teaching experience, copies of teaching licenses from other states and any other professional licenses or certifications.
