Resident Rights
The Kansas nursing home regulations on resident rights are geared to providing residents dignity of existence, self-determination and access to persons within and outside the nursing home. The resident has a right to exercise these rights and should be notified of these rights. Further, residents have the right to manage their own finances. Various other rights of a similar nature serve to preserve the rights to self-determination of Kansas nursing home residents.
Nursing Home Practices
Kansas nursing homes are not allowed to use psychopharmacologic drugs on the residents to control them or discipline them. The nursing home should conduct an assessment of a resident's needs when he is admitted and at periodic intervals after that. The nursing facility should have in place an infection control program. And it should provide activities that enhance the residents' well-being. The regulations also provide that quality of care should meet certain standards and provide adequate nursing and physician care. As well, residents should have access to dental care. The state also requires the facility to provide residents with nourishing foods that meet their dietary needs. A facility could also outsource food preparation tasks subject to some standards.
Nursing Home Inspections
The Kansas nursing home regulations also mandate periodic inspections of these facilities. During such inspections, the nursing home is to make available all its records to the inspectors. State agents will tour the facilities and observe residents. They will watch to see how the patients interact with the care providers and also gauge the emotional behavior of the residents. After making all sorts of evaluations, the state agents will present their findings.
