Radiological Safety Training

Radiological safety training is very important.

Radiology safety training involves applying the general principles of radiation safety to the setting of a medical facility's nuclear medicine or radiology department. The Department of Energy (DOE) mandates that hospitals and other health care facilities train their employees in this area.

Scope

Radiology safety training involves instruction in basic radiological fundamentals, radiological handling techniques and primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of radiological accidents. Other areas of focus include following "as low as is reasonably achievable" (ALARA) measures and X-ray and fluoroscopy safety.

Duration

Program length varies with the depth of instruction and the subject matter, but the Initial Radiation Safety Training course, offered by Tufts University, lasts two hours. Other programs, such as the Medical Radiation Safety Officer course, from Dade Moeller, lasts five days.

Cost

Program costs vary depending on the comprehensiveness of the program, but the 5-day course from Dade Moeller costs $1,995 as of October, 2010. Tufts University provides pricing information concerning the Initial Radiation Safety Course upon request.
