Side Effects After Bladder Biopsy

A bladder biopsy provides valuable information.

If you are experiencing symptoms of bladder cancer, your doctor might order a bladder biopsy to see if you have cancer. There is a risk of side effects after a biopsy, which is a surgical procedure.

Bladder Biopsy

In a bladder biopsy, your doctor will remove a small portion of the tissue of your bladder for closer examination under a microscope.

Urinary Tract Infection

You might develop a urinary tract infection after undergoing a bladder biopsy. One symptom of a urinary tract infection is painful and frequent urination.

Damaged Bladder

According to the National Institutes of Health, there is a small risk your bladder might be damaged or even ruptured during a bladder biopsy. If this happens, you might experience pain and notice blood in your urine. If you experience either of these, call your doctor immediately.

Decreased Urination

Decreased urination caused by a severe infection or by a blockage in your urinary tract might follow your biopsy. If you see a sudden decrease in how much you urinate or if you stop urinating completely, call your doctor.

Treatment

A urinary tract infection can be treated with antibiotics. Surgery might be required to repair damage to your bladder or a blockage in your urinary system. If any unusual symptoms occur, contact your doctor.
