Education
To become a diagnostic radiologist, you will need to complete four years of undergraduate education, four years of medical school, a one-year internship, and four years' residency in radiology. Some radiologists also choose to complete a fellowship after this training to specialize in one or more diagnostic fields.
Salary and Compensation
Salary.com reports that the national average salary for diagnostic radiologists was $403,488 as of May 2011. Compensation levels varied by geographic location. Salaries in Indianapolis averaged $396,225, while in Chicago, the average was $428,101. Ocala, Florida, radiologists averaged $360,960, and those working in San Antonio, Texas, averaged $373,630. San Francisco had one of the highest compensation averages at $484,185.
Experience Affects Compensation
Your job experience will also impact your compensation. In San Francisco, diagnostic radiologists who has less than one year of experience has a projected salary of $417,245; however, 15 years of experience resulted in a projected salary of $465,929. A similar salary differential exists in Indianapolis. A new radiologist has a projected salary of $341,446, and 15 years' experience increases that projection to $381,285.
Industry Choices and Compensation
The type of company you choose to work for as a diagnostic radiologist will also dictate your salary range. Indianapolis, diagnostic radiologists who work for the government, in education, or nonprofits average $397,350; those working in for-profit health care average $405,273. Working in biotechnology also paid more than the nonprofit sector with a reported average of $402,952.
